This article talks about Cindy McCain as a political liability because of her former addiction to painkillers, resulting from physical trauma and following a period of being constantly labelled a D.C. "trophy wife." I remember reading in Julia Thorne Kerry's books (on depression and on divorce) she talked about how life as a political wife was so unbearably phony. Looking back at photos of when she was on stage with John Kerry, Kitty Dukakis, and Michael Dukakis, she said, made her think "what lies our lives were, because there we were smiling and waving and I was so suicidal for so long and now I find out that back then Kitty was struggling with addiction."
I love the article's quote from McCain's first wife Carol about their divorce and John, then 43, falling for Cindy, then 25:
He was also still married to his first wife Carol, although the couple had recently separated. Carol later attributed the breakdown of the marriage to “John turning 40 and wanting to be 25 again.”
